Welcome to TESOL CoP!

Dear Participants,
a warm welcome and thanks for your interest in joining this online Community of Practice (CoP)! As you may already know, this CoP will start on 14th January and hopefully will be actively nurtured by all of you until 30th April 2008.
In this first phase, we will start building the on-line CoP by getting to know one another. To do so, let me ask you to post a message in which you:
1. introduce yourselves. It'd be great if you add your first name to the subject title of your introduction message, e.g "Mary's Introduction".
2. Add a brief bio about yourself, including the following:
a. your current teaching background;
b. any experience you have had with blogs ;
c. any experience of CoPs

Hope to read you soon...
Meanwhile, feel free to look around :-)
All the best,
Anna Franca

Good morning Anna Franca,

I am pleased to participate as a member of your program to share ideas and interests in our field. I am the designer and director of the English language project Inglese Dinamico located in Venice. You can visit the website, www.inglesedinamico.com to learn more about the project, our interests and what we are doing.

An important area of interest for us is developing bilingualism as an opportunity for everybody. We strive to do this through bringing new teaching methodology to the field, new materials not currently in use, and an emphasis on developing oral language as the path to true academic literacy and social communication.

We participate in developing innovative teaching laboratories for children, teenagers and adults in which we move away from textbook teaching to an 'enriched educational approach' stressing the need to build phonological skills, listening and speaking skills before reading and writing. It is an interactive approach and also utilizes sophisticated materials to 'scaffold' learners to new levels of achievement. Currently with Roberta Purisiol, a colleague of the project, we are designing a high standards program for academically fragile high-schoolers and chronic low-achievers, particularly in English.

As part of the project, we have designed an intense summer course to be held in America 2008 which gives kids from 15 to 21 a real experience living and participating as a family along with being able to do an internship in a summer camp so that they really learn the rhythm, vocabulary and use of English while doing real-life activities along with great recreational activities -- all in English! Thanks to the low dollar, we have just been able to lower the price.

I think that if you look at our programs, workshops and descriptions of the materials we are using, it might lend some perspective to a lively discussion on classroom teaching and the nature of 'study' abroad. Of course, we always invite comments and criticism so that we can respond by thoughtfully integrating these ideas into programs as we identify teaching and learning needs. Again, I'm always interested in people's experiences in classroom teaching, particularly with issues related to phonology, speaking and how to move away from textbook teaching to extend kids' knowledge.

Good luck! I'll look forward to speaking with other participants.

Thanks Anna Franca. We all at Inglese Dinamico appreciate the link. Also, I failed to clarify that the program for America is an exciting opportunity for participants (15 to 21) to experience the one of the most important presidential elections in American history! The Democratic convention will choose the nominee during the first session of the course (again, please note there is now a 15% discount). This is a golden opportunity to be a part of an extraordinary era. .don't forget! The Clintons vacation in Martha's Vineyard and are frequently on the streets speaking to people!!! Come join us.

Hallo everybody!

Franca, it's great that this is finally happening - looks sort of magic to be part of a Tesol community again! :-)

I'm Paola, I am currently working as a researcher in the department of English Studies at the University of Verona. I have been teaching English for many years, and Italian as L2 for a couple of years, too.
My experience with blogging is limited, especially as concerning its use in language teaching and education - but would like to learn more... so here I am! I did use some forums with students while teaching Italian, and that was a very good experience.

As for CoPs, I participated in last year Tesol course about Learning Object and, well, that was a GREAT experience, both from a professional and a human point of view!!!

Well, all for now, hope to read you soon :-)
